A legal bat starts with the governing organization—not the player's age or a product listing. Use this as the national baseline, then confirm the division, state, and named event before checkout.

What each mark means now

Announced high-school change
What changes in 2028
Beginning with the 2028 NFHS season, the published permitted non-wood options are:
- Existing BBCOR .50 bats
- New USA BBCOR -3 bats
- Specially certified and permanently marked USABat -4, -5, and -6 bats
The permanent mark matters. A generic -5 or a USSSA-stamped -5 does not become high-school legal because it has the same drop. USA BBCOR bats are scheduled for retail sale beginning July 1, 2027. Existing BBCOR .50 bats remain eligible in NFHS play indefinitely; NCAA moves exclusively to USA BBCOR on January 1, 2029 under the published transition.
The five-check purchase test
- Organization: Who governs the game?
- Season and division: Which rule year and age group?
- State and event: Is there a local exception or stricter tournament rule?
- Permanent mark: Is the required certification printed on the exact bat?
- Exact model: Is that length/drop still approved and absent from withdrawal lists?
